AMC developing “Red Mars” into series

The AMC cable channel, home of the Emmy magnet “Mad Men” announced today that they are developing a new science fiction series based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s 1992 novel “Red Mars.” The first of three novels exploring the first colony on Mars, this one is considered the best, having won a Nebula award. Its exploration of the social, cultural and scientific issues surrounding such an event made it a best seller.
Given AMC’s track record with high quality “Mad Men” and their commitment to SciFi blogging (especially the weekly column from John Scalzi), we actually have hope that this book won’t get butchered on its way to the screen. Given the rate it takes to adapt from print to series, don’t expect to see the pilot for at least another year.
