Trailers

Legend of the Seeker episode 7 “Identity” premieres this afternoon. The promo above promises a story of a witch who prophesies betrayal for Richard by his closest ally. Whatever. Is the chick in the white flowy robes and the wicked daggers going to kick some more armor-clad ass? Because we can’t get enough of that and we’re not getting our fix otherwise until Eliza Dushku brings her A game back to TV in February’s Dollhouse.

We here at LoG HQ are big fans of two things: damn good television and media companies that understand the Internet. Put the two together and you get the Legend of the Seeker video widget above. Legend is inspired by the Terry Goodkin series of fantasy novels, Wizards First Rule. The team that brought us fondly remembered Saturday afternoon syndicated one hour action fare Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess have revived the form. And this time they are taking advantage of the Internet to bring you video goodness. What more can you ask for?

First, we must say that this is a beautifully crafted promo trailer. It does a masterful job of recapping Season Four while giving just a tease of what lies ahead without being too spoilery. And it hits on key moments from last season that reminds us why we were sucked back in despite the questionable direction of Season Three.

That being said: what’s with the “Grey’s Anatomy” approach to the music? This isn’t a feel good night time soap. This is a dark, dangerous and twisty tale of fate, friendship and random number sequences. It needs music with a little more edge, not the soulful ballads of The Fray. We’re not saying it has to be Nine Inch Nails (though we would be thrilled to see that), but how about the Smashing Pumpkins “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning” recently used on “The Dark Knight” trailers or even Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s hauntingly pure rendition of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow“?

That’s all were sayin’.

While I wasn’t a big fan of the movie adaptation of The Da Vinci Code, I was of the book. And truth be told I think that Angels & Demons has a better storyline to it. It has a deeper plot, more mystery elements, and generally feels like a more polished novel than Da Vinci does.

Hitting the internet this week is the trailer for Angels & Demons, due out in May 2009. Tom Hanks reprises his role as the protagonist, and Ron Howard again directs the flick. I’m sure it’s going to make them both a boat load of cash, and hopefully it won’t e as campy as their first try at a Dan Brown work.

Fox  Broadcasting has finally announced the premiere date of the Joss Whedon - Eliza Dushku action series “Dollhouse.” Friday February 15th will be the big day for the Whedonverse to get its first full hour of Joss broadcasted goodness since “Firefly” went off the air in 2003. The curious thing about the announcement is that Fox made it via Twitter. Seems they’ve woken up to the fact that a large majority of Whedon fans are Internet savvy.

On the down side, Friday is a crappy night for programming. Most younger potential viewers make plans to go out for the evening and because of that no show has taken off on this night since “The X-Files” in the early ’90s. Many quality sci-fi shows have tried since (i.e.”Firefly”), but none have succeeded other than SciFi’s original Friday night line-up (”BSG”, “Sanctuary”, etc.), but those shows don’t pull in the numbers a Fox show would need to survive.

Fox may have doomed our little “Dollhouse” before it’s started. Well, re-started.

November sweeps is in full swing. For those of you unfamiliar with the terminology, sweeps months are those that the Nielsen company tracks ratings more closely. The television networks then use those results to set rates to charge advertisers until the next sweeps period, in this case, February. So you will see few repeats and lots of big surprises in your favorite shows.

However, tomorrow’s Presidential election is screwing things up something fierce. Due to the sudden resurgence of “Saturday Night Live” as a vehicle for political satire, a special edition of the sketch show will be airing tonight instead of “Heroes” (with “Chuck” also pre-empted the hour before by “Deal or No Deal.”)

This leaves us with a new episdode of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” which hasn’t been seen in two weeks. The last promo we saw didn’t specifically talk about this episode, so instead we present a sneak peek of a scene between Brian Austin Green and “Battlestar Galactica: Razor“, “Life on Mars” and “Farscape” vet Stephanie Jacobsen.

Tonight is the usual line up of The CW’s “Smallville” at 8p and “Supernatural” at 9p (with a Halloween episode!) It’s also the night for original airings of Discovery’s “Destroyed in Seconds” at 9p.

I discovered this gem over the weekend. It’s essentially a clip show of things blowing up (see embedded video), crashing, falling over — you get the idea. From natural disasters to operator error, there seems to be no end of clips of trainwrecks in various forms. I believe there is a policy of not showing anything where people die, so gather the kids and show them why they should never ride in any kind of vehicle whatsoever.

It’s a thin night with the Presidential candidate Barack Obama taking over the airwaves tonight. There’s the second season of ABC’s romantic dramedy “Pushing Daisies” at 8p (promo above) and SciFi’s “Ghost Hunters” at 9p. There’s also Discovery’s “Mythbusters” at 9p and Comedy Central’s “South Park” at 10p. Or you could just watch the last season of BSG on DVD. Again.

The two CW stalwarts “Smallville” and “Supernatural” continue to chug along with their devoted fan base and solid young viewer demos at 8p and 9p. But tonight presents two new offerings. And by “new” we mean an American version of a British show and something that looks like the CBS version of “Fringe.”

Life on Mars“, as can be seen from the trailer embedded above, is about a present day cop who wakes up in the early 70s after getting hit by a car. He doesn’t know why or how, but since he is stuck he starts working on police cases. ABC has put together a 4 minute clip (above) explaining the show.

Also at 10p, the “Eleventh Hour” is yet another Jerry Bruckheimer CBS procedural, but this time the investigators look into the extremes of science. Sound familiar? Need we say more?

Preview trailers, sneak peeks and interviews with show writers are all embedded after the jump. (more…)
